Here are some photos of some of the components after preparing them as shown in the previous post.
Here are the two maple blanks and a piece of ebony that will be sandwiched and glued together for the neck. The ebony is about 1/8in thick. The 3 pieces glued together will be wide enough for the neck except for the peghead. I will need to glue “ears” on at the peghead to allow for the full width. This seems a little weird, but I guess it’s pretty common practice. It actually make sense, because if the entire blank was as wide as necessary in order to accommodate the peghead, there would be considerably more waste.
This piece of ebony will be finished to be the fretboard. It’s about 3/16in thick. I will need to cuts slots in it to hold the frets and glue it to the front of the neck. Ebony is very hard so it stands up well to playing.
This piece of ebony will be a decorative veneer glued to the front of the peghead. It’s about 1/16in think.
These 2 photos show the strips that were cut and sanded for the rim. They are about 1/4in thick, 3in wide and 54in long. These will need to be steam bent into hoops and glued together to form the rim. I have never stem bent wood before and I am excited to try!
